[FIN] Helppo, perinteinen geokätkö Keronsalmen laavun maisemissa, n. 200 m Kerontieltä. Paikalla on runsaasti pysäköintitilaa, laavu, tulisija ja PuuC. Talvisin tie laavulle ei ole avoinna, joten sukset tai lumikengät voivat olla tarpeen.
[ENG] An easy, traditional geocache by the Keronsalmi lean-to, distance from Kerontie 200 m. A lot of parking place, a lean-to, a fireplace and a wooden toilet. In winter you might need skis or snowshoes.
[FIN] Keronsalmi yhdistää Pikku-Keron ja Iso-Keron järvet. Keronsalmen rantautumispaikka sijaitsee ikivanhan kauppa- ja kulkureitin varrella. Muinaisina aikoina liikuttiin veneillä ja kulkijoita täällä riitti, sillä vesireitti yhdisti toisiinsa Pohjanlahden ja Jäämeren vilkkaat asutukset. Kauppaa käytiin ja huonoina aikoina osapuolet kulkivat ryöstö- ja kostoretkilläänkin näiden maisemien kautta. Myöhemmin tällä kohdalla on ollut puun uiton purkupaikka.
Kero (Iso- ja Pikku-kero) on Iijoen vesistöön kuuluva matala ja säännöstelty, pinta-alaltaan noin 20,5 km2 suuruinen järvi , joka sijaitsee lähellä Kuusamon etelärajaa. Ne ovat suosittuja vetouistelujärviä, joissa ui mm. taimenta ja siikaa runsain mitoin.
Noin 1,5 km ylös Pikku-Keroon laskevaa vesistöä sijaitsee Kurjenkoski, joka on pienimuotoinen, kaunis ja helposti kalastettava urheilukalastuskohde. Kurjenkoski on suosittu kalastuspaikka, eikä ihme, sillä matalahkossa joessa on sopivasti tajua koskea, nivaa ja jokisuvantoa, joista voi saada väsytettäväkseen villin taimenen tai jokiluontoon kotiutuneen kirjolohen.
Lähistön nähtävyyksistä kannattaa muistaa Kuusamon suurpetokeskus lähellä 5-tietä, Iso-Keron rantamailla. Harvassa paikassa kokee niin autenttisesti jyhkeiden petojen läsnäolon.
[ENG] Keronsalmi connects the lakes of Pikku-Kero and Iso-Kero. Keronsalmi is situated on the ancient trade and travel route where people came ashore. In ancient times people moved around with boats and there were plenty of people on the move, because this water route connected the Arctic Ocean and the Gulf of Bothnia to each other. People traded and in bad times different parties went through these lands on raids and reprisals. Later the place was used for offloading timber after floating.
Kero (Iso-Kero and Pikku-Kero) is a shallow and regulated lake - its area is about 20.5 sq.km - in the Iijoki river system and it is located near the southern municipal border of Kuusamo. They are popular lakes for trolling and they have, among others, plenty of trout and whitefish.
Approximately 1.5 km up the waterway, that empties itself to Lake Pikku-Kero, is where Kurjenkoski is located. It is a small-scale, beautiful and easily fishable spot for sport fishing. Kurjenkoski is popular fishing spot and no wonder, because this shallowish river has suitable amount of fierce rapids, strong flow of water and still water, where one can find trout and rainbow trout, naturalised to the river environment, to wear down.
From nearby attractions one should remember Kuusamon Suurpetokeskus ("Kuusamo large predator centre") near road number 5 on the banks of Lake Iso-Kero. There are only a few places where one can experience so authentically the presence of large predators.
