Blackhead Point, also known as Tai Pau Mai indigenously, Tsim Sha Tsui Point or Signal Hill, is a cape before any reclamation in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong. It was named after a German businessman in Hong Kong named Friedrich Johan Berthold Schwarzkopf, who naturalised as a British citizen and anglicised his name as Blackhead.

The Signal Tower was built in 1907 at Blackhead Point to house a time-ball apparatus previously located in an eariler tower in front of the Tsim Sha Tsui police station.

Signal Tower

Precisely at 1 p.m. everyday, a large hollow copper ball suspended on top of the tower was released by a special mechanism and dropped to the foot of the mast. Long before radio broadcasting, this served as a time signal visible to ships in harbour for checking the accuracy of their chronometers used in navigation.

The tower was originally 42 feet high. In 1927 its height was increased by 20 feet, by an additionaly storey with a dome, to make the time signal more visible.

From 1920 the ball was dropped twice a day (at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.) until 1933 when it was judged obsolete and the practice was discontinued. Time signals by radio were becoming common place.

It was where typhoon signals were hoisted in Hong Kong because it was the highest hill near the middle of Victoria Harbour.

The MAGNETIC and CAMOUFLAGED cache container is in Nano size.
