Geocache Description:

This is a series of 13 caches on a flat circular route of about 2.5miles around the Thunderfield / Haroldslea area of Horley. The route is along Public Bridleways, Public Footpaths and quiet Lanes. The route is generally suitable for children, though some of the footpaths are narrow and it may not be possible to use Buggies etc.

To the south-east side of Horley there is an area stretching from a point north-east of Langshott Manor to the M23 Gatwick link road, and a point about a quarter mile east of Balcombe Road across the M23 motorway. This area was known for many years as the Manor of Haroldslea
Within this area, although on private land and not really visible from the public byways, there is an unusual moat; two concentric moats. Within the inner moat there is a main central island and a smaller island. Although there are no known old legal references to a castle in the area, the first reference to Thunderfield Castle was by an 18th century historian (Aubrey) who named the moat as Thunderfield Castle. During the same period several maps refer to Horne Castle. Later maps followed the tradition that the site was of Thunderfield Castle.

The caches are differing sizes, 7 micros, 5 small containers and 1 nano.
Generally the walking surface is good but may become muddy after heavy rain. The whole route is across flat terrain. PLEASE TAKE A PEN OR PENCIL

On road parking is possible near caches #1, 5, 8, 9 & 13.
