[EN] Red Cross hospital of
Smiltene
Location: Smiltene, Dakteru iela (Doctors’ street)
Description: The construction of Smiltene hospital building
is connected to a tragic event in the life of Fürst P.Liewen, the
landlord of Smiltene manor. At the beginning of 20th century his
son died from an untreatable desease and Fürst Lieven decided to
build a hospital, so that people could access qualified medical
help. P.Liewen himself created the Project drawings, managed the
construction work and covered all expenses. The exact sum is
unknown, but it is certainly one of the biggest gifts Smiltene
received in 20th century. The hospital was created as a surgical
hospital with modern equipment, 25 five beds and two halls – one
for women and one for men. During the construction of the hospital
a park around it was also created. On September 14th, 1903 the
hospital was officially opened. After the First World War, when
Latvia gained its independence, Smiltene manor and the hospital
became the property of state and Red Cross organization took the
hospital under its wing.
There is a curious event associated with the history of this
hospital. Fürst Liewen had built narrow-gauge railway and during
WWI, together with the owner of Launkalne manor, had used it to
transport an X-ray machine (the first time one was imported into
Latvia) from Riga to Smiltene. Russian soldiers stopped them and
accused them of a serious crime spying, since they assumed that the
fancy device was some sort of an elaborate spying machine. The two
adventurists luckily got through by convincing the soldiers of
machine's humanitarian purpose. The hospital is still working, the
number of beds has doubled and now a new building – out-patient
clinic is connected to the hospital via air tunnel. In 2003, when
the hospital celebrated its 100th anniversary, a commemorative
plaque was unveiled to honour fürst Liewen.
