Geocache Description:

St. Andrew, Colne Engaine

This church dates back to the 12th century with walls of flint and stone-rubble mixed with Roman brick and tiles. The chancel was probably rebuilt in the 13th century and the West tower was added possibly in the 14th. Early in the 16th c the top storeys of the tower were rebuilt and the South porch was added.

The alterations to the tower can be dated fairly closely. A will of 1496 (John Drapers, a skinner of London) ordered the sale of lands and tenements for the purchase of 40,000 'brykes' - 10,000 to be given annually for the work on the belfry of the church. These were probably more than enough as the porch was rebuilt at the same time, of the same materials as the tower.

There is a car park at the village hall but this can sometimes be locked at night. After doing this cache I can thoroughly recommend a pint at the Five Bells!

The cache is a small green screw-top container about the size of a 35mm film can. Please replace as found.
