Geocache Description:

Number 717 in the Church Micro Series.

A bargain in Headcorn, as you get two for the price of one!

1. The Parish Church of St. Peter and St. Paul

The Parish Church is dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul, and the present building dates back to the 11th century. The nave of this church was probably on the site of the present chancel, whose north and east walls date from that period. A south aisle, in the area of the present Lady Chapel, was added in the 12th century. In the 13th and 14th centuries, a new nave was constructed, and the present south aisle was added in the early 15th century. Later in the same century, the tower and south porch were built. The nave roof is an exceptionally fine example with deep mouldings and massive rafters.
In addition to the Lady Chapel, there is a small chapel at the west end of the south aisle, dedicated to St. Nicholas. Externally the church is approached through a lychgate, built to commemorate the year 2000, and donated by the people of Headcorn. The avenue of trees along the path were planted for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

The remains of the Headcorn Oak are in the churchyard near the south door of the parish church. It is said that King John (1199-1216) sat underneath the Headcorn oak to watch bull baiting. It was extensively damaged by fire on 25 April 1989.

2. The Methodist Church

The exact date of the first Methodist Society in Headcorn is not certain, but it built its first chapel for worship separate from the parish church in 1805. It was replaced by a second in 1854. The present building cost £800 when it was put up in 1867.

Please ensure it is left securely fastened and well hidden. Thank you.
PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN PENCIL

The area can get quite busy so stealth may be required.

If anybody would like to expand the Church Micro series please do, we would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names, to avoid duplication.

Whilst in the village, why not take the opportunity to also visit the nearby Flagstone Alley cache.
