WHO/WHAT/WHERE:

Northwest Ohio Geocachers are the proud adopters of a two mile section of US-24/River Road, west of Waterville near Grand Rapids, with a portion of our section bordering Providence Metropark. You can trace the route with Google's Street View in either direction from the links below.

Our obligation is to pick up litter four times a year along our adopted highway section.  In return, ODOT has posted nice free advertising for us on roadway signs (see image above), at each each end of our adopted section.

Coordinates of our sign at the east end of our highway section:
 N 41
º 25.974'    W 083º 49.871' - Google Street View

Coordinates of our sign at the west end of our highway section:
 N 41
º 25.029'    W 083º 51.446' - Google Street View

ODOT will also post orange "SHOULDER WORK AHEAD" signs at each end of our section for each of our clean-up events.

We are responsible for picking up litter between the berm of the road and the utility pole line.

In the past, with enough volunteers to make four groups, these CITOs took barely an hour to complete.

These CITO events are actually a good time, as we also usually find a place to grab lunch  and socialize (usually in Grand Rapids) plus hunt caches after the event.

Click here to see photos of previous events.

We meet at the American Legion Post 232 (12580 River Rd. at Yawburg Rd.)parking lot, at the coordinates at the top of this page, to coordinate our event, and to hold a "tailgate" AAH Safety Briefing.  Being close to the middle of our adopted section, this is a good base of operations with safe and ample parking.

If you can not, or do not feel like walking and picking up litter, we can always use a driver to shuttle people, as well as water and other supplies.

We split into two to four groups and work FACING TRAFFIC ONLY! Depending on the number of volunteers, we start in the middle and work to the ends, and then return on the opposite side, or start in the middle AND at the ends with someone helping to shuttle. Without someone to shuttle, a group drives to each end, parks safely, and then gives their keys to the group working towards the ends as they pass each other.

Each adult participant must sign a State of Ohio group release form which should be available at the event.

Children 12 and over are welcome to participate when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Parents or guardians must provide a State of Ohio Parental/Guardian Release Form at the event. Please note that that State of Ohio does NOT allow children under the age of 12 participate in the Adopt-A-Highway program.

By participating in this Event Cache, you are agreeing to the guidelines and liability limitations as described by Groundspeak's Geocaching.com Disclaimer that can be found here. and on all other cache pages. Additionally, you agree and understand that you are participating as an individual, and that NWOGEO has no insurance and assumes no liability in the unlikely event of a mishap.

Our NWOGEO volunteer representative with the State of Ohio for this program is Hydnckr.

WHAT TO BRING:

Everyone must wear a Safety vest during the event. ODOT supplies fluorescent colored, vinyl, one-size-fits-all, safety vests. They  can get a bit uncomfortable in hot weather. Alternatively you may wear our Safety Green NWOGEO T-Shirt or bring your own Safety vest. More comfortable cloth netting Safety vests are available at some of the same places as the grabbers below.

While ODOT provides trash bags, some of us bring extra bags just in case.

While not required, a 5 or 7 gallon plastic bucket is a lot easier to carry the bags in. A bungee cord to keep the bag open in the bucket helps too.

Many of us also bring along "grabbers" to avoid bending over and touching the litter.

Economy models are only around ten bucks...

with more deluxe models costing about twice as much.

Wear bright colored clothes, and sturdy shoes. Long pants that can be tucked under socks help against the ticks. Some of us wear pants with zip off legs. Work gloves are always a good idea, given some of the things we find!  Some of us also wear Latex gloves under our work gloves.

You may also want to bring insect repellant with at least 20% DEET or 15% Picaridin, as we have had a few tick incidents, even during cold weather. Sunscreen is also a good idea, as well as a hat if you are inclined to need one.

If you have FRS/GMRS radios, bring 'em along, and set them to channel 2. Also don't forget to bring your cell phone, and exchange numbers with our volunteer "shuttle" drivers and with those working other road segments.

Additional info for the following is available in our local NWOGEO website Geocaching Tech Forums.

WHY:

This is one way for us to give back to the community as well as furthering a good name for our local and national groups as well as geocaching in general. So let’s have lots of people out there, do it quickly, and have fun in the process!

Any questions may be posted here as a note in the logs, or on our website below, and someone will reply.

Hope to see you there!
