FLORIDA SPIRIT QUEST
#001
"THE LIGHTHOUSE
KEEPER"
Welcome to Curlew Pioneer Cemetery, established in 1869, an
old Churchyard burial ground in Palm Harbor Florida.
The coordinates listed above will take you to the Monument
for Sherrod Edwards, the first Lighthouse keeper for the
Egmont Key Lighthouse.
His Light was officially certified on April 19, 1848, and
shortly thereafter he activated it. At that time, the lighthouse
was the only one between Key West and St. Marks. On September 23,
1848, a powerful hurricane covered Egmont Key with several feet of
water. Called the Great Hurricane of '48, this storm is estimated
to have had winds equaling those of Katrina in 2005, with 18 foot
storm surges. Keeper Edwards and his family, according to local
legend, survived the storm by seeking refuge in a small boat
tethered to a Palmetto tree. Shortly thereafter, Keeper Sherrod
Edwards rowed his family ashore and resigned. The lighthouse was
later rebuilt and still stands, now part of a State Park.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to pay
your respects to Mr. Edwards' monument, located at the coordinates
listed above, then to note the monument of "Sarah", buried near to
him. Sarah, according to her monument, was a "beloved wife" of a
man whose first name was not the same as the
Lighthousekeeper's.
Cooridinates to the container are:
N28 03.x and W82 44.y
where x = Sarah's Birth Year minus 1668 and
y = Sarah's Death year minus 1129
