In November 1676 about 15 000 soldiers were located in this area between Västra Odarslöv, Svenstorp and Stångby. The camp existed for about a month until the Danes marched to meet the Swedish army at the Battle of Lund, December 4 1676. In addition to the soldiers the camp also hosted thousands of war refugees, merchants, family members, craftsmen of various kinds and prostitutes. There were also approximately 10 000 cavalry horses and a large number of animals used for transportation of the huge amount of troop supplies needed. At this time the city of Lund only had about 1 500 inhabitants.
The camp was organized with the regiments and battalions located in line. On both sides in rows along a main road tents were raised. Higher officers and some specialized functions were accommodated in houses or huts.
The burden on the surrounding landscape was extremely heavy and there are evidence showing that whole houses were taken from the villages nearby to be rebuilt in the camp. The nearest villages, Skälshög and Håstad (which was later rebuilt), were entirely wiped out. Food to the horses, maybe as much as 40 tons a day, was picked mostly from the farmers' winter stores, and so were most certain also other supplies and firewood.
The location of the camp were from several aspects carefully selected. The vast plateau at Skälshög is a very suitable place if the aim is to militarily dominate the surrounding terrain. The Danes controlled the two major transit routes to Lund / Malmö, and established a defense circle with minor units located in the surrounding villages. They could even observe their enemy, since the Swedish army had its camp at Lilla Harrie, 4 - 5 km Northwest of this location. Two major streams also crossed the camp and fulfilled the urgent need of water to soldiers cooking and cavalry horses.
