Geocache Description:

Micro placed as part of the 'Church Micro' series. Possibly wheelchair accessible (some assistance would be required to reach the cache and there are some bars to negotiate near the Footpath entrance), stealth required.

St. John the Baptist and St. Helen, Wroughton

Wroughton church is situated on the hill to the West of the main village, at a place known as Ellendune, which was thought to be an ancient Hill fort.
It was near here in 825 AD that King Egbert (a Saxon) of Wessex defeated Beornwulf of Mercia (an Angle) and effectively became the first ‘Bretwalda’ or basically, the King of England. The brook of Elledune ‘Ran red with blood, it was choked with slain and became foul with carnage’ as the battle raged.
Several parts of the present day church can be dated from the 12th century, while it was much extended in the 14th & 15th centuries and then again in the 19th century.
It is said that there has been a place of worship on the site from the 10th century however.
Parking for the cache can be found at: N51 31.235 W001 48.170
This is the church car park, so please remember that this will be heavily used at certain times, especially Sundays!
The cache is a Micro, hidden a short walk from the parking area and forms part of Sadexploration’s ‘Church Micro’ series.

If anybody would like to expand this series please do, we would just ask that you let Sadexploration know first, so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
