EUR
l'Esposizione Universale. Tale data non fu scelta a caso, infatti
ampi spazi verdi.
dopoguerra in EUR dall'acronimo di Esposizione Universale Romana;
Arnaldo Foschini, Vittorio Grassi, Tullio Rossi e Costantino
All'interno, dietro all'altare, c'è la figura di Cristo, a sinistra
la Cappella dedicata all'Immacolata Concezione e a destra la
Cappella dedicata a San Francesco.
Paolo.

EUR
EUR is one of the districts of Rome (more
precisely number 32) who was established in relatively modern
times: in order to achieve the project to host the 1942 Universal
Exposition. This date was not chosen at random, it was to coincide
with the celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the March on
Rome (28/10/1922) and the taking of power by Mussolini.
The projects are prepared starting from 1936 under the direction of
Piacentini that tries to combine modern and classical architecture
of the Roman Empire to create impressive effects. The basic idea
also includes the use of large green spaces. The works began almost
immediately but will soon be stopped for problems related to the
outbreak of World War II.
In the post-war years works went on slowly and only during the
Olympic Games of 1960 the entire district received a new impetus to
its development with the construction of new buildings (the water
tank - Il Fungo, the Sports Palace and the Velodrome). The original
name of the district was E42 (Exhibition 1942 - the logo still
visible on some manholes in the area), then changed after the war
in EUR from Esposizione Universale Romana but the official name is
Europa District.
La Basilica di S.Pietro e Paolo
The Basilica dei Santi Pietro e Paolo is placed
in the highest point of the Eur. The project started in 1938 and
works for the construction began in the following year (1939). At
the end of the war the cherch was not finished and also suffered
for the explosion of one bomb. In the following years the works
went on slowly and only in 1955 the Basilica was opened to the
public for the first time. Initially the church was entrusted to
the management of Cardinal Francis Seper and in 1967 was elevated
to the rank of Basilica.
The building has a central cube surmounted by a dome with a
diameter of 32 meters. The outside walls are covered in Roman
travertine stone and "pietra di Chiampo paglierino di Vicenza."
Inside, behind the altar, there is the figure of Christ, left the
chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and right the Chapel
dedicated to San Francesco.
The basilica is located on top of an imposing staircase that starts
from Viale Europa. At the top of the staircase are placed two
impressive statues of S.Pietro and S. Paolo.
PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN YOU RETRIEVE THE
CACHE, YOU MAY LET IT FALL AND MAKE IT NOT RECOVERABLE. NOW IT'S
POSSIBLE TO STICK IT TO THE WALL WITH MAGNET!!
