History Series Challenge Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Khoda: I adopted this 9 year old series 5 years ago. After 9 years it's time for something new.
Besides, the puzzles weren't very good.

Geocache Description:

Cache not at these cord's!!!

History. Some say it never repeats. Others that we should learn from it. All I know is that it forms a fun theme to do geocache puzzles!

This cache is a challenge cache, with additional requirements that need to be met.

The challenge (and rules):

  1. Complete all ten History caches listed below.
  2. Log your visits to each cache
  3. Solve this, the eleventh cache puzzle (using the solving methods of the other ten puzzles) and log your visit
  4. I am not asking you to prove that you have completed each of the History caches (like other challenge caches do by requiring a listing of your log dates etc) I will trust you on this. BUT I WILL remove your log if I find that you have failed to complete one of the ten caches.
  5. OPTIONAL: Not required but requested. Log which of the History puzzles you felt was most difficult, and which was the easiest (this will help those who are about to embark on the challenge), and which of the caches hides you thought was most difficult.

The ten History puzzles are these listed somewhat in order of what I think is easiest to most difficult, (though I suspect that this is completely arbitrary):

History Traffic Monitor     1 out of 5
History Peat Farmer     1.5 out of 5
History Power Walker     1.5 out of 5
History Park Ranger      2 out of 5
History Bird Watcher      1.5 out of 5
History Deer Stalker     3 out of 5
History Green Keeper     3 out of 5
History Gate Keeper     3 out of 5
History Lion Tamer     3 out of 5
History Leaf Raker     3.5 out of 5

Notes, clues and warnings regarding puzzles

  1. Study the dates.
  2. Don't study the cache names! Yes, they are goofy, but I don't care! The names have nothing to do with the solution, but rather were random thoughts about the location that are known only to me...
  3. "Leaf Raker" is a little more difficult, and you will need to do some research to gain the solution.
  4. Cache difficulty rating is purely for the physical hiding location, and is totally separate to the puzzle difficulty
  5. Pay attention to attributes - especially the stealth attribute. When it has stealth required... it usually means it. Some of these will need some forethought when you decide to grab them.
  6. These puzzles are intended to be difficult, and have built in traps for the unwary.
  7. If you think you are on the right track, but seem to get stuck, email me. I have uncovered discrepancies with dates online, and flat out errors on my part... I will correct them if so - OR I can tell you whether you are skipping down the wrong garden path.
  8. Finally, keep in mind that I set out to produce a series of ten puzzles that are each different in their solving technique. With somewhat limited ways a number can be derived from historical events, you will find in the end that most ways are represented in one of the puzzles.

The Clues for the final cache location

  1. History Bird Watcher: Vandals sack Rome
  2. History Traffic Monitor: Admiral Karl Dönitz, President of Germany after Hitler's death, orders all German U-boats to cease offensive operations and return to their bases.
  3. History Gate Keeper: First recorded case of snowfall in Los Angeles, California.
  4. History Leaf Raker: Michael Joseph Jackson is born
  5. History Deer Stalker: The highest temperature ever recorded in the UK – 38.5°C (101.3°F) in Kent. It is the first time the UK has recorded a temperature over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
  6. History Park Ranger: Mississippi ratifies the Thirteenth Amendment, becoming the last state to approve the abolition of slavery.
  7. History Power Walker: Ford Motor sells 1st Model A car
  8. History Lion Tamer: Faulty electrical wiring ignites a fire underneath the Playtown Cabaret in Osaka, Japan. Blocked exits and non-functional elevators cause 118 fatalities, with many victims leaping to their deaths.
  9. History Green Keeper: Cheerleading is started at the University of Minnesota with Johnny Campbell leading the crowd in cheering on the football team.
  10. History Peat Farmer: Michael Phelps wins 8 Gold Medals in 2008 Olympics

A word about the final cache.

When you navigate to the final, use the nearest traditional cache to get you into the area. From there continue on to the cache. You will see Private property signs as you proceed, respect these please. The cache and the approach to the cache is on public land. If in doubt, email me with the final co-ords (to verify that you have solved the puzzle), and I can email you back with waypoints for the approach route.

Cache contains an Australian Silver Florin that is not hugely collectible, but has been a personal treasure of mine for years. It is more of a curiosity piece and should be fun for the FTF. I will drop some swag into the caches at a later date (right now they are a little empty).

That's all you need to know...
