CHURCH MICRO 577 ALL SAINTS TOLLESBURY KNIGHTS

Thought to date from the 12th century (by the thickness of the walls) this little church of just chancel and nave contains many details from the 15th century. Its greatest treasure is a stone effigy of a knight from about 1380 in full armour holding his heart in his hands.

In the bell cote there are two bells both cast in Colchester, one in 1595 the other 1664. There was an unusual custom here for the ringing of the death knell. It was rung twelve to twenty four hours after death; the larger bell for persons over twelve years of age and the other for children. The bell was tolled for one hour, three strokes every five minutes for men and two for women and children.

The church was neglected for many years but has now been taken over by the Orthodox church and is no longer a parish church. The church is closed but the key is available from the Greek Orthodox minister nearby.

On the way to the church you pass The Patriarchal Stavropegic Monastery of St John the Baptist, a monastic community for both men and women

The cache is a micro and contains the coordinates for Tolleshunt Triangle Knights Bonus on the back of the logbook.
