TOLLESHUNT DARCY
D’Arcy - the first of these came over with William the
Conqueror.
Tolleshunt D'Arcy Hall is a beautiful moated house which dates
back to the 15th-century. It lies to the south of the village close
to the splendid church of St. Nicholas. A report of Queen Elizabeth
I progress through Essex at the beginning of her reign states that
she stayed 4 days with Lord D’Arcy. They held the lordship of
Tolleshunt D’Arcy from the time of Stephen till the close of the
16th century.
The well known Red Hill of Tolleshunt D'Arcy is of interest for
value as a prehistoric Roman salt making site. Today it’s well
known for the unusual village maypole. This is one of the first
things that travellers meet on entering the village and although a
maypole now it was the site back in 1710 where all the village
hangings took place. In the early 1700’s it was removed as it
interfered with the traffic and a more appropriate site was
established.
Margery Allingham (May 20 1904- June 30 1966) was a writer of
detective stories. She invented the detective Albert Campion.
Margery and her husband, the writer and illustrator P. Youngman
Carter, bought D'Arcy House in 1935, formerly the home of Dr J H
Salter, at Tolleshunt D'Arcy, which was to be their home for the
rest of their lives. Her memoir "The Oaken Heart" (1941) was based
on life in the village during the war.
Tolleshunt D'Arcy,is also home of the famous D'Arcy Spice Apple
(may also be known as Baddow Pippin) which was first introduced in
the gardens of Tolleshunt D'Arcy Hall in 1880. This lovely golden
apple is full of flavour that keeps well.
