Each year for the past few years, my family and my sister's family
have gotten together in the San Rafael Swell on Easter so we could
have an Easter egg hunt for our kids. This year, we chose Box Flat
because we knew that, due to the rough road into the area, we could
avoid the hordes of people who go camping in the Swell on Easter
weekend.
This was my third trip to Box Flat in the past two months, and I'm
really beginning to love this place. The road is extremely rough,
and you need a high-clearance 4x4, ATV, dirt bike, or your own two
feet to get there. The Box Flat road forks, and both forks dead-end
at the wilderness study area boundary, but from there there are
plenty of hiking opportunities into some amazing and solitary
country.
The cache is on the top of a knoll of Navajo Sandstone which could
possibly be difficult to get up onto. The sides of the knoll are
mostly vertical, but there's one place where you can scramble up to
the top using your hands and feet. Once on top, look for the cache
underneath a small overhang and covered by some rocks. The view
from on top is nice--you can see all of Box Flat, and also Jackass
Flat and many areas beyond.
