Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden next to a deserted bunker on the levee.

Find your way out of the city to Törökkanizsa Street and leave the car at the end of it. Or if you have a strong vehicle you can drive up the levee and reach the bunker. The best way of searching this cache is by bike. Then you can take a nice trip along the Kamara Töltés (Treasury Levee) and back on the Tisza Levee.

Trivia:

1 The bunker must have been built in the early 1950s when they thought an attack from Yugoslavia was imminent. There are hundreds of others like this along the 630 km long border with the ex-Yugoslavia. Be careful when entering: no-one knows what or who you’ll come upon inside. Bring a good torch. I didn’t have one so I took a picture with flash. Examining the photo later, I saw rubble and dirt only. You can find several other bunkers by the levee and in the fields.

2 This place was a battlefield on 5 August 1849 when the Hungarians fought desperately for independence against the Austrians and Russians. The Hungarians defended the levee but the enemy won the battle in the end. The Battle of Szőreg – as it is called after the nearby village – is commemorated by a cross where the levee is intersected by Highway 43.

3 Why is it called Treasury Levee (Kamara Töltés)? Because it was paid for by the Treasury in Vienna. This area belonged to the Banate of Temes or simply the Banat (with the centre of Temesvar – Timisoara), which was ruled directly from Vienna after the Ottomans were driven out in 1718. The levee was probably built in the middle of the 18th century but the exact time is not known. It is 10 km long and it ran along the river Maros as it flew into the Tisza. However, in the 19th century these rivers were “regulated” that is their meanders were cut off so the levee seems pointless now. But it is still there weathering many seasons during the centuries.

Have a nice trip.
