This place was probably colonized since the stone age, the Romans had here an military post.
The castle was built in 12th century by Leopold III (who died here 15.11.1136 - Holy Leopold, national patron of Lower Austria, buried in the monastery Klosterneuburg). The mountain carried at this time the name " Kahlenberg"!
End of the 13th century was the castle extended.
1529, before the arrival of the Turks, it was burn downed and the rest was 1557 blown up.
1679 donated Emperor Leopold I. the Leopoldskapelle (chapel), which however 1683 were destroyed by the Turks. After the victory over the Turks the chapel was rebuilt and 1693 to the Hl. Leopold dedicated (since then the “Kahlenberg” is called Leopoldsberg and the neighbouring “Sauberg” is called Kahlenberg!).
Beginning 18th century a palace was built here, but it burned down in 1891.
Between 1873 and 1876 operates an endless rope haulage system between Kahlenbergerdorf and here! Church (and castle) was damaged (by bomb) during World War II and rebuilt afterwards (you can see still some “craters” a little downwards along the foot bath “Nasenweg”).
