Flysch is
a quite soft stone mainly consisting of sandstone, marl and
mudstone – where sand, slit and clay are the primary materials. A
100 millions to 55 millions years ago (during the Cretaceous
period) these materials have been swept by the rivers into the
Tethys Ocean and deep-sea trenches. The immense forces of the
continental drifts compressed sandstone, marl lime and mudstone,
and elevated the deep-sea trenches up to the land surface.
Flysch stone appears in the Salzach river southerly of Bergheim
as steeply erected rock ribs.
The flysch belt is a geological tectonically entity in the
northern limestone pre-alps which extends over the area northerly
of the city of Salzburg along Haunsberg, Buchberg, Tannenberg and
Upper Austria. Over millenniums the Salzach river trenched its way
through morainal stone and brash accumulations of the former
glacier of the Salzach foreland and finally uncovered the
geological flysch bedrock which now causes the rapids near Bergheim
