St Mary’s, Henham
In the pretty village of Henham
we find St Mary’s. There was a church here in Saxon times.
There is some 12th century Norman shingle work
incorporated into the South side of the tower.
Once you enter the Church,
notice that the pillars on the north side are shorter than
the ones on the south side. Look at the carvings of two angels
censing the Virgin and Child on the capital of the second column.
If you look behind this column you’ll see a face of a
laughing devil.
Fragments of wall paintings,
possibly 12th century in origin, were uncovered on the
Chancel walls in 1989. On the north wall there is a very early
fresco of a Nativity(?) scene.
There are six bells in the
tower.
