ST MARY THE VIRGIN, PELDON CHURCH MICRO 523
‘Peltenduna’ was recorded as having a church in the 1085 Domesday Book. It wasn’t until the 14th century when the tower was added to the Norman building that St Mary’s Church dominated the skyline of Peldon.
The April 22 1824 earthquake damaged every cottage and house in the village in some way. (See also: Langenhoe GC1KHZV)
The church tower lost some of its battlements. The tower has a noticeable lean but this had been noted before the earthquake and is due to subsidence because of the poor land the church is built on.
The oak hammerbeam trussed roof is the finest feature of the church. There is the Royal Arms painting over the North Door, a replica of King George III arms, the original having been stolen. This was from the time when it was law to display the sovereign coat of arms in church.
