PUERTA DE
ALCALA |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
The Door of
Alcala is one of the most significant monuments of Madrid (Spain)
together with the Cibeles's nearby(near) source(fountain). It(she)
was ordered constructing for the king Carlos III and is a work of
the architect Francesco Sabatini. It(he,she) is situated in the
Plaza of the Independence, in the crossing of the streets of
Alcala, Alfonso XII, Highland and Salustiano Olózaga and close to
the Door of Spain, principal entry to the gardens of the
Retirement. As the street in which it(he,she) is situated, the Door
receives his(its) name for being situated in the way that he(she)
was leading to the locality of Alcala of Mowing meadows. Before the
current one already another Door of Alcala existed. It was
constructed in brick and something was located more on the west, at
a height(the level) of the Alfonso's XI current street. It was
constructed in 1599 on the occasion of Margarita's arrival of
Austria, wife of the king Felipe III, to the city.
After his(its) entry in Madrid, on December 9, 1759, across the
former Door, which was not of his(its) pleasure, Carlos III her(it)
decided to knock down and to construct the new one, project that
was registering inside his(its, her) plans of improvement of the
city. It(he,she) turned into the principal entry of the villa and
into one of the most representative monuments of his(its) reign,
axis(axle) of the reforms that led to end in the whole zone this of
the city: Botanical Garden, Walk of the Meadow, Cibeles's
sources(fountains) and Neptune,
etc.

Anno MDCCLXXVIII
("Siendo rey Carlos III.
A ambos
lados, cuatro esculturas de niños.

Prudencia, Justicia, Templanza y Fortaleza.

During the night, the lighting grants
to him(her) a very special freightage in which the arches are
highlighted. Fact happened before the Door of Alcalá:En 1823, the
Door of Alcala received in his(its) stone a blast of bullets of
cannon. In the century XXI they can it(he,she) turns still(yet) the
signs. Across the arches of the door illustrious, triumphant
peoples have spent(passed) along the history, defeated, courtships
and parades.
The count of Vistahermosa happened(passed) for the same site(place)
on July 30, 1854; it had been defeated in Vicálvaro (Madrid) but
he(it) was coming brandishing as trophy a lance of the enemy. The
persons from Madrid nicknamed him(her) from this moment "Longinos"
(as the Roman soldier that it is said that it(he,she) crossed with
his(its) lance Christ's side). On March 8, 1921, at twenty after
eight in the afternoon, the President of Ministers' Council,
Eduardo Dato, was returning in his(its) car to go to his(its)
house, after a long session in the Senate when a motorcycle
appeared and someone from her(it) started shooting. They led the
president to the House of Help that was placed closely together, in
Olózaga's street. Information came already without
life. |
