El Fitó
La roca de les
sis
A l’hivern, quan
Aquestes ombres continuen sent
petits ajustos complementaris.
The rock of
six
The mountain shadows, the
oldest clock of Palau
The Verdera mountain and its shadows
has shown the time since ancestral times. When wristwatches didn’t
exist, this was a very good provisional reference for all the
farmers who worked in the fields in the lower part of the
village.
In the summer, when the days are
long, the "Fitor" is converted into the needle of a sun dial which
is visible from the whole of the municipality, and which works
until the evening. In the winter, when the days are shorter, one
can take the shadow of the terrace at Sant Onofre as a good
reference.
When the "Fitor" shadow comes to the
small rock pile that is after the gully of Sant Onofre it is solar
five in the afternoon. This is the first sign, but if the day is
long enough, the "Fitor" marks thehours until the last hour of the
afternoon. When the "Fitor" shadow extends up to the white rock
everyone knows that it is solar six in the evening. In previous
times, the farmers knew that, at this time, they had to start to
collect up their tools in order to return home to rest.
The white rock of six is situated on
the west face of the boulder field that is just under the "Salt de
la reina" (Queen’s jump). In the morning it is a more subtle rock,
but in the afternoon it takes on an obvious white colour, which
cannot be mistaken.
The "Fitor" clock stops working early
in the winter, when the sun sets before the shadow reaches the
white rock. This is when the shadow from the terrace at Sant Onofre
can be used as a good reference point.
Palauencs all know perfectly that
when the shadow of the terrace of Sant Onofre reaches the base of
the block of stones which are a little to the east, after the
gully, it is solar four in the afternoon.
These shadows are still visible today
and are valid for knowing the solar time. If we wish to know the
clock time, i.e., the official time, we only need to add one hour
in the winter and two in the summer, and apply a small
adjustment.
The morning references
It was not only in the afternoon that
the palauencs looked at the position of the sun to know the time. A
villager remembers some of the references that were used in the
morning. Now we must also look towards the mountains of Roses and
to the vast Empordanes plain.
"When the castle of Sant Salvador no
longer has a shadow (because the sun is exactly above it) it is
nine o’clock", says a Palauenc, "at ten, Sant Onofre can not be
seen", says one of his colleagues, and at the same time, the castle
of Trinitat has the sun above it. And this is how we get various
references until it is lunchtime, twelve o’clock, which was always
accompanied by unmistakable signs.
At midday, the sun is situated
exactly above the castle of Montgri. At the same time, according to
records relating to this subject, the metal chime at the can Frai
mansion in Pau was rung, which could be heard over a wide area of
the plain. Further signs were, that when midday was approaching,
the mares became frisky and showed that the morning had
passed.
