Unfortunately I never got a chance to get to know yfbtanky very
well. I chatted with him at events and found a few caches with him.
I enjoyed his wit, and I enjoyed his "custom" of hiding a new cache
near events, and subtly posting the coordinates somewhere at the
event using little Dymo labels.
So when I read of his unfortunate death, I knew I just had to
honor him by hiding a "YFcache" at his funeral. Tanky probably
would have done it himself, if he had planned ahead that far.
;-)
This cache is hidden with the express permission of the Cemetery
Director. If you get a chance, stop in and say thanks.
If you never had the opportunity to attend an event where a
YFcache was hidden, here are some snippets that he wrote for those
caches:
YFcache
- "At the June, 2004 RCGDS picnic I hid a phony cache in a likely
hole just to see if these true geocachers would poke around out of
habit. Twenty dedicated cachers found it and signed it."
YFcache2
- "At the July, 2004 RCGDS picnic and water fair I craftily posted
a set of coordinates and nothing else on the bulletin board just to
see what would happen. Basically it was like casting a lure in a
pond of hungry fish. Fortunately (for me) I had made up a cache and
hidden it because thirteen dedicated geocachers walked the
half-mile to the cache and found it. I shudder to think what would
have happened if there was no cache."
YFCACHE3
- "At the October, 2004 N.U.T.S. event I craftily posted a set of
coordinates and nothing else on the door just to see what would
happen. 14 dedicated geocachers who seem to carry nothing but a
wallet, an appetite and a GPS found it with apparent
difficulty."
YFCACHE4
- "This cache is located very near to the location of the January,
2005 “A Gathering of N.U.T.S. In Chico” event. As is my
custom I craftily posted a set of coordinates, which didn’t
seem to help some of us. ;-)"
YFcache5
- "This cache is located very near to the location of the February,
2005 ”Gung Hay Fat Choy” RCGDS event. As is my custom I
craftily posted a set of coordinates that only the cleverest of
geocachers could make use of."
YFcache6
- "This cache is situated very near to the location of the April,
2005 ”Gathering of the Cattle” RCGDS event. Although
there is no stage one, several people at the event seemed to have
trouble finding stage one. ;-)"
YFcache7
- "An event thingy. This cache is situated very near to the
location of the April, 2005 “What Li's Ahead NUTS
Gathering” event. Although the Tank couldn’t be there
YF cache seems to have made it to the event."
YFcache8
- "This cache is situated very near to the location of the May,
2005 “Springtime In Coloma II” event. The cache was not
yet approved at the time of the event so if you signed the logs you
are free to log the cache now."
YFcache9
- "This cache is situated very near to the location of the June,
2005 “White Jeep Raffle” event. Note gang approach to
this difficult cache."
YFcache10
- "A bunch of flatlanders from RCGDS decided to see what a mountain
looked like and took a hike on Donner summit. I couldn’t let
that go by without giving them something to look for.
YFCACHE11
- "The usual event micro from Tanky that hadn’t been approved
yet. There is always the possibility that another cacher might
place something within 0.1 mi of this one and prevent it from being
published, but life is a risk. If it doesn’t get approved
ignore this. ;-)"
YFCranky
- "This cache was placed during the “Double Dog Dare
Ya” (GCRW42) event in the manner of the YFCACHExx series.
Some found it the hard way, others the easy way. The cache was done
in a sort of cranky way, but they had it coming."
YFCACHE12
- "This is the usual Event cache from YFBtanky that hadn’t
been approved at the time. The cache is an easy one, but finding
the coordinates at the event seemed to cause a little more of a
problem."
YFCranky-er
- "This cache was placed during the “Go N.U.T.S. - Have
Dinner at the Depot” (GCT9Q6) event in the manner (somewhat)
of the YFCACHExx series."
YFCACHE13
- "Just another event cache by Tanky. In June, 2004 I stuck a film
can containing a log in a tree at the RCGDS picnic just to see what
would happen. It was like gulls on a dead carp. Since then the
slightest hint has caused satellite overload at these events as
geocachers (who care little about the numbers) formed roving gangs
in search of Tanky Treasure. This one is no different."
YFcache14
- "Getting ready for the August RCGDS event in Bear Valley, I
couldn’t resist the usual hide. ... There is NO NEED to move
any rocks, but unless you’re into critter roulette you might
want to poke a stick in there first."
Feel free to write something in memorial to yfbtanky in
your log.
