Geocache Description:

An easy find on a gun at the local RSL. Please note the description of where it's hidden, and don't reveal it's presence to the muggles. This cache will not be replaced if it goes missing again!!!!

All of my caches are hidden in the least observable spot, which in this case means under the traversing ring near the wheel closest to the wall, in front of the rectangular steel bar which crosses the traversing ring.

Taking, or pretending to take, photos of the gun and plaques and markings provides a good camouflage for the hunt.

There is a spoiler photo if you really need it. The photo was taken while I was sitting on the Gun Layer's seat - that's the small round wooden piece between the wheel and the breech - that's the big chunky bit the barrel comes out of.

I was hunting down RSL War Artefacts/Memorabilia by MADSTARS and found this very well restored Quick Firing 25 Pounder Field Gun in front of the City of South Perth RSL.

This is the best example of restoration I have seen outside of major military museums and is a credit to The City of South Perth, the RSL, the RSL Sub-Branch, and The Royal Australian Artillery Historical Society of Western Australia. It was placed here in 1961 to commemorate the service personnel of World War Two, and was refurbished and returned here in March 2003. Please treat this area with respect and take a moment or two to reflect on their service, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

MADSTARS offers extra points for his cache if the finder also places a cache on the War Artefact, so I had come equipped for just such an eventuality. After a quick saturation check (nothing closer than 930 metres by my calculation) I hid a magnetic key container containing only a logbook somewhere in the gun. You will need to bring your own writing implement.

Update 2 May 09. The container has been replaced with a magnetic Eclipse mint tin and now contains a pencil, but I still recommend bringing your own writing implement as there is no sharpener.

Update 9 Mar 11. The container has been replaced with a magnetic nano as a temporary measure.

Update 14Feb 13. The container has been replaced with another magnetic Eclipse mint tin containing stash note, log, finders cards, pencil and pencil sharpener, but I still recommend bringing your own writing implement as the sharpener and/or pencil are just as likely to go missing as the entire cache.

I agree with MADSTARS on the importance of introducing our children to the RSL's and telling them what the men and women of the armed services did for us and our country, and the freedom we enjoy today. I look to those geocachers who hunt in company with their children and/or grandchildren to further this aim, so that they too Will Remember Them.

Lest We Forget.

My thanks to the City of South Perth RSL Branch and the Council of The City of South Perth for their permission to place this cache.

This cache is part of a series leading towards a Bonus Box. There is a BB number in the back of the log book. You will need to record this number in the format 68? (from WanAus 68 and ? for the BB number) for future reference>
