Geocache Description:

This is a Church Micro situated close to St Mary The Virgin and St Nicholas church. It is an ideal cache and dash. Although the church is certainly worth a visit.

The church is situated in the small village of Sandy Lane with all it's 'Chocolate Box' thatched cottages and old public house 'The George'. This is allegedly the only church in the country made solely from wood with a thatched roof. The church was opened in 1892 as a 'Mission'. The total cost of the church structure when it was erected was £170 pounds. All the fittings and fixtures within the church itself a further £220, a total cost of £390 which is not very much at all considering that it's materials were wood and straw. Even the insulation between the wooden walls is saw dust. Ironically a few years ago it required re-thatching and that maintenance alone cost £5,000 pounds. The church is almost always open and is well worth a visit just to see the wooden interior and fixtures. There is convenient parking adjacent to the church opposite Saw Mills Cottage. The road that you cross can sometimes be a little busy so it is advisable to keep hold of little children and dogs whilst crossing over. If any body would like to expand to this series please do, we would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid any duplication.
