If you approached the suggested parking from the easternly direction, then you are likely to have passed Foliejon (also known as Winkfield Lodge and Winkfield Park). This is one of the principal great houses in Winkfield with entrances from Drift road and Chawridge Lane.
It was given to John de Drockenford, Bishop of Bath and Wells, by Edward II in 1302. In 1350 the estate appears to have passed to the Crown with a reference to ‘the King’s Manor of Foliejon’ in 1385. It passed through the hands of several owners until 1800 when Thomas Bingley began the new building that we see today, with the old house being integrated into the farm house.
The house was purchased in 1804 by William Blane and four generations of Blanes lived at the property. The family restored the mineral water spring, St Hubert’s Well, in the grounds. Later tenants of the house included Sir Simon Mark of Marks & Spencer Ltd and Princess Hatzfeldt-Wildenburg whose horse Ascetic Silver, winner of the 1906 Grand National, is buried at Foliejon.
From March 1942 to the end of the war Foliejon became the home of the exiled King Haakon of Norway and his son Prince Olaf during the occupation by the Nazis.
Between 1957 and 1992 the building was owned and occupied by the managing directors of Mining and Chemical Products Ltd. It is now owned by Mr W. A. Manoukian.
The cache itself is located on a public bridleway off Drift Road and is a small clip lock box.
