Geocache Description:

Have you ever wanted to see your Geo-Map full of smiley faces? Well now you can, in the shape of a big smiley face!!!

The smiley series of 20 traditional caches and 1 mystery cache covers an area that is 1-Mile in diameter and just over 3 miles in circumference.

The containers are self designed PVC tubes that are about 10-inches long and 2-inches in diameter (see attached picture). They were initially painted in desert cammo to match the landscape, but during the course of putting them out, some of the paint has already started to come off. Eventually, I am sure, they will return to the original white of the PVC tube. There is room inside for small trade items.

Because of the difficulty of the terrain, I made no attempt to disguise the containers beyond their paint, so they are lying in the open at the base of bushes. The only evidence of passage in the area, besides me, was cattle and immigration neither of which should have the time or ability to mess with our game. My GPS had about 10 – 12 foot accuracy the entire time. You should plan to spend several hours on these caches.

A note about the area:

First and foremost, the area is State Trust land. As most of us know, the State Land Dept has no problem with our activities, but does “request” that we have the proper permits to access State Land.

An Arizona state land permit can be obtained by visiting the following site, printing the required application, and mailing it (with a check) to the address listed. it takes about two weeks to get it back.

Second, the road you will take to get you started is passable by a 2-wheel drive, high clearance vehicle. I would STRONGLY discourage attempting to take a passenger car in. You might make it, but……

Third, I selected the area by looking at the placement of existing caches on Google maps. I needed an area large enough to put out this many caches, without over saturating it. As you will soon discover, this area is perfect. What I didn’t plan for was the VAST amount of White Thorn! You will probably bleed on this trek. I strongly discourage taking kids or pets, or the wearing of shorts. I strongly ENCOURAGE taking lots of water in the summer months and a hiking stick to try and move some of the brush aside. There are no roads to walk on.

Fourth, in terms of safety, if you make this hike during the monsoon season be careful when crossing the small ditches. Flash floods can come quickly. Also, as this is a desert environment, I don’t need to tell you to watch out for the typical assortment of desert threats, especially snakes.

Enjoy the series, and be careful. Most important, SMILE!
