The Bozkov Dolomite Caves are situated on the northern slope of the Bozkov village in the hilly landscape of the Krkonose foothills. The Bozkov dolomite caves, created in calcareous and siliceous dolomites, is a labyrinth of underground corridors and cavities situated not very deep under the surface. The typical and unique decorations of the accessible caves consist in quartz ledges and listels in walls and ceilings. Some of the hollows are even filled with stalactites and stalagmites, including interesting small eccentric stalactites and stalagmites, in addition to the traditional calcite decoration. The whole length of space discovered – 1050 meters and difference in altitude (denivelation) of 43 meters – makes caves the longest system in Czech republic.

The caves originated in the course of thousands of years with a slow process of gradual solution of calcic dolomite of the Paleozoic era. The development of subterranean carst shape was, however, restricted by the area and thickness of the relatively small dolomite lens, which is defined with the insoluble schistose rocks (phylites) and is a part of discontinuous stripe of carst (limestone) rocks, going through the Podkrkonosi region roughly in the western-eastern direction. In the Quaternary era, some of the formerly created free subterranean spaces were secondarily filled with the deposits of sediments from the surface. It was at that time that the current stalactite decoration came into existence.

Sightseeing route is 350 meters long and lasts about 45 minutes. Attractive items of the sighseeing route also include underground lakes with crystal-clear blue-greenish water. In Listopadova jeskyne (‚November cave‘) you can find unique of nature – the largest Czech underground lake – Jezerni dom (‚Lake dom‘). During sightseeing the lights are switched off for a while, except the lights inside the lake. In twilight you can enjoy beauty of lake view.

The Bozkov dolomite caves is the only cave system in North Bohemia accessible to the public. The caves and their surroundings is a protected area conditioned by the nature and landscape protection law.

To approve your log-in, please answer questions and complete the task. Except the looking for answers you have to visit caves and make a picture in certain place. Ticket and fee (for a camera) is necessary then. I believe you won’t regret the visit.

1) DOLOMITE
a) Mention basic physical properties of mineral – hardness, specific gravity (density) and crystal system.
b) Explain the origin of the name ‘Dolomite’.
2) BOZKOV DOLOMITE CAVES
a) When have the caves been discovered? (Year)
b) Average temperature inside the caves? (Degrees Celsius)
3) PICTURE
Make a ‘self-picture’ (picture of you or your team) in two given places – see added picture (you can look better of course ;-)

Please add your picture in your log-in and answers send via my profile.

I hope you’ll enjoy your visit just like over 2 million other visitors to this day.

Bozkovske dolomitove jeskyne jsou nejseverneji polozenymi zpristupnenymi jeskynemi v Ceske republice. Nachazeji se v podhuri Krkonosv blizkosti vesnice Bozkov. Vznikly silnou korozivni cinnosti podzemni vody v cockovitem telese vapnitych dolomitu, metamorfovanych a misty silne prokremenelych. Vyznacuji se neobvyklym rozsahem selektivni koroze sten a stropu. Jejich vyzdobu tvori vedle krapniku unikatni kremenne listy a rimsy, vystupujici ze sten a stropu. V nejnizsich castech jsou trvale zaplaveny vodou vytvarejici podzemni jezera. Pred zpristupnenim musely být hladiny podzemnich jezer snizeny o vice nez pet metru. Svou celkovou delkou dosud objevenych prostor – pres 1050 m a s vyskovym rozpetim (denivelaci) 43 m - jsou nejdelsimi dolomitovymi jeskynemi v Ceske republice.

Z celkove delky je zpristupneno je priblizne 350 metru chodeb, pricemz samotny prohlidkový okruh trva priblizne 45 minut. Uzas vyvolaji podzemni jezirka s modrozelenou, pruzracnou vodou. V Listopadove jeskyni pak najdete prirodni unikat, nejvetsi podzemni jezero v Cechach – Jezerni dom.

1) DOLOMIT
a) Uvedte zakladni fyzikalni a morfologicke vlastnosti nerostu – tvrdost, hustotu a jaky vzhled maji krystaly.
b) Jak nerost prisel ke svemu jmenu?
2) BOZKOVSKE JESKYNE
a) Ve kterem roce byly jeskyne objeveny?
b) Jaka je teplota vzduchu v jeskynich?
3) FOTOGRAFIE
