Geocache Description:

A 600ml round lock & lock box along a bridleway near Old Warden airfield.

This cache, the second in a series of caches celebrating the aircraft of the Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden, is on a bridleway near the airfield, on the Old Warden Circular Walk.

The series has a bonus cache: each cache contains a letter/number combination that you'll need to find the bonus.

Some waypoints for parking, and a suggested route around the series, are given on the page for the bonus cache (GC1Q0ME)

Note that the footpath has a kink in it for ~100m around GZ. It isn't obvious, because it looks like plenty of people ignore the kink and follow the edge of the field, but the actual footpath passes to the West (airfield side) of the cache.

The area's quite nettley in summer, so long trousers and gloves are advisable.

The Westland Lysander is best remembered for the role of "spy taxi", where its STOL capability made it excellent for picking up and dropping secret agents behind enemy lines.
Lysanders operated from nearby RAF Tempsford.

The Shuttleworth Collection's Lysander is the only flying example in the World ... or at least, it was in February 2009 when we created the cache, but on 9th June 2009 the Canadian Warbird Heritage Museum's Lysander made its first flight following years of restoration, so now there are two flying. If you don't mind, we'll leave the Lysander in the cache set for now :-)

You can see the Lysander at the collection all year round, and flying at Shuttleworth air displays, held approximately fortnightly May to October. The Lysander's Bristol Mercury engine makes a wonderful sound!

The path north from this cache to the Bleriot cache goes through a field that sometimes contains cows. The area around the gate to this field gets very muddy! If you have a pram and it's been raining, you may have to carry it a short way.

Amenities: The Shuttleworth Collection has a cafe, gift shop and toilets, there's a pub that serves food in Old Warden village, and a farm shop in Upper Caldecote.
