St Bartholomew’s was built in 1850 being commissioned by Sarah
Leigh, daughter of Thomas Leigh, Rector 1803-1848, in memory of her
father at a personal cost of £4,000.
There have been many alterations over the years particularly to
the heating. It was known for the congregation to have teeth
chattering and shivering at services.
The organ arrived in 1899 – Rev. Ernest Geldart, then rector of
Little Braxted church and the originator of the wonderful murals
there, carved the case of oak.
The clock on the steeple was converted to electronic mechanism
in June 2008 (it was previously being wound by hand). The church is
easily found as the tall tower with spire proves an effective
landmark.
