SideTracked - Thirsk Traditional Geocache

Side Tracked caches have become a nationwide series of caches for public transport users. They are intended to provide quick cache-and-dashes at or nearby railway stations. Caches can be found close to stations of the national rail network and well as heritage railways. For more information on the SideTracked series of caches can be found at click here.

Although called Thirsk the railway station is located on the edge of the village of Carlton Miniott; Thirsk town centre being approx 1 ½ miles to the east. 22 ¼ miles north of York the original station was opened 1841, although none of the original buildings now remain. In 1855 The Leeds and Thirsk Railway company opened a line to Ripon via Melmerby which was closed to all rail traffic in 1959.

Today the station is served by regular trains operated by First TransPennine Express, Northern Rail. In 2008 direct rail services to London were re-instated as part of Great Central Railways daily Sunderland – London Kings Cross operation.
