info:
"Auci" is one of the memorial plcaces of the first president of
Latvia Janis Cakste (1859-1927). The future president was born int
the house "Cakstes" in Lielsesava village in Jelgava district on
September 14, 1859. His parents had taken on lease Berstele estate,
as well as administered a windmill and a brick-kiln.
Janis Cakste's father Krisjanis Cakste purchased "Auci" house in
1871 to create a farmstead hear. Part of the future president's
childhood was spent in "Auci" and this farm became his country
property till the end of his life.
The present "Auci" dwelling house was built in 1926, following the
initiative and directions of the president, as a wide house where
the big president's family could live comfortably. The author of
the design of the house was president's friend architect Robert
Legzdins.
After the death of the president in 1927 the house was managed by
his son Janis Gedimins Cakste and the president's widow Justine
Cakste. In 1944 the Cakste family went on exile to Sweden and the
house became the property of the local council.
During World War II the buildings of "Auci" were significantly
damaged. In addition, the damaging continued during the Soviet
times when several immigrant guest worker families lived
here.
The rebirth of "Auci" began in 1995 when president's grandson Janis
Konstantins Cakste regained the family property. By 1999 the
dwelling house was renovated here and it'ssurroundings were
landscaped. Upon the initiativeof the owners and in the cooperation
with Jelgava Museum of History and Arts memorial rooms for the
first President of the Republic of Latvia Janis Cakste were
created.
The house is a private property, but the rooms allocated to the
museum are available for anyone. You can see the permanent
exposition about Janis Cakste'spersonality, his social and official
activities, materials that tell about the fates of Janis Cakste's
family members, as well as the exhibition about the transformations
of "Auci" through time. The visitors to the museum can also walk
along the alleys of linden-trees and chestnuts in the old park and
have a rest on the banks of the river Lielupe.
