Geocache Description:

This is the eighth in a series of micro's hidden in Brantford parks. All of them are stand-alone caches, and are not tied into a final stage. The reasons for placing these caches are to increase the number of caches hidden in the Brantford area, to provide cachers with a brief history of the parks they will be visiting, and to give cachers the opportunity to enjoy some of the beautiful surroundings in "The Best Blooming City" in Ontario! Please take a pen or pencil with you.

This park was named in honour of Florence Dolph Buchanan, the first woman to both own and operate a radio station in Canada. She became owner and operator of CKPC from 1940 - 1972.

CKPC was discovered completely by accident back in 1923 when Wallace Russ, of Preston, and his two buddies, Tom Mead and Charles Bonner, were tinkering with a couple of ham radios in Russ' garage. A neighbour called to let him know that he could be heard over the radio. A license soon followed and CKPC was originally broadcast from Russ' garage in Preston, Ontario, Canada (thus the PC portion of the call letters).

Eventually Russ sold the station to his friend Cyrus Dolph who operated it in Preston for a number of years. When Dolph eventually relinquished control of the station to his daughter Florence Dolph Buchanan, in 1933, the station was moved to Brantford. Her husband, J.D. Buchanan, acted as station manager until Florence became both owner and manager in 1940. She saw it through many changes, moves and stages of growth to the point where the station now broadcasts from it's own location on 571 West Street, Brantford.

In 1972 Richard Dolph Buchanan purchased his mother's shares in the company "Telephone City Broadcast Ltd." and took over as sole owner of 1380 CKPC and FM 92.1 the sister station.

NOTE: Please remove and return the cache container gently to and from it's hiding spot so that the site doesn't get damaged. Using two hands would be an asset.

Congratulations AfghanQueen and O-ironman for FTF!
