Geocache Description:

This is a quick and easy cache placed outside the entrance to Lory Park so that it can be accessed even when the access gate to the parking area is closed.

We have spoken to the owner and he has given us permission to place a cache where it is. However, the part time security guards are not aware of the cache so please take care when searching for and replacing the cache.
The cache is a film container which contains only a log sheet/Geocaching "Stash Note". There is no room for a pen or pencil so please bring your own to sign the log sheet. The cache has been moved to a new location because the gates have beeen modified. It is now magnetically attached to a new item that has been erected and is again accessible even when the gates are closed. Please replace the container exactly as you found it!

We only became aware of this delightful place by accident and believe that it warrants having a cache close to it as this will improve awareness. The actual Park which also has a very nice tea garden is well worth a visit so enter the actual park to have a look around. Some background information regarding the Park is as follows:-

Lory Park Animal and Owl Sanctuary is a bird haven and sanctuary situated in Midrand, South Africa , an area that was once a host to many indigenous Fauna and Flora. Over a period of time the impact of man-made hazards on our environment, often through ignorance and a lack of understanding, has been the cause of numerous wildlife casualties.

Curator Eddy van Eck began collecting various birds from the early age of 14. His interest began with Lories, Lorikeets and Cockatoos. By the mid '90's his collection of Lorikeets was the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere.

Traveling worldwide he built up a reputation with other breeders and became renowned for his breeding success rate. Being on the same latitude as many South American countries and with his ability to breed the impossible, a collection of CITES appendix I & II have joined the centre.

After further enhancing his studies of numerous birds in their natural habitat, he realized that South Africa had no proper avian facilities whereby the general public and more importantly school children could attend and receive the necessary environmental education required.

His mission - to open a park/zoo, where first and foremost children could be educated on the rehabilitation of the environment and secondly encounter a holistic learning experience. Since opening, the park has turned into a fully fledged zoo, as a result of additional animals.

FIRST TO FIND honours go to Urban Hunters - their 40th FTF. Well done!
