Geocache Description:

A clean-up mission in a local park in Kyeemagh, Sydney.

This cache is not only about making sure this public park is spic and span, but it will be used to place a new cache to commemorate the clean up and those who participated in it.

Barton Park is in Kyeemagh. Kyeemagh is an Aboriginal name meaning 'beautiful dawn'. Prior to European settlement it was part of the lands of the Cadigal people, though Gweagal and Bidjigal peoples also have ties to the area.

The area between the Cooks River and Georges River was originally known as Seven Mile Beach. John Webb was given a three hundred acre land grant in 1837 but did not settle on the land because it was too scrubby and arid for farming. In 1882, 309 acres (1.25 km2) were resumed for a sewage farm and another 311 acres (1.26 km2) were added later. The sewage farm was discontinued in 1916 when an ocean outfall was built and subdivision took place.

John Goode had property in West Botany Street, from which he built a private road to Seven Mile Beach, as Lady Robinsons Beach was known then. Alderman E.G. Barton, worked to develop the district, including the reclamation 120 acres (0.49 km2) of swampland where Barton Park and Kogarah Golf Links now stand. The area is the St. George catchment and Barton Park has been suggested as possible home for the NRL club, the St. George-Illawarra Dragons.
