Geocache Description:

A small cache in a lovely, quite reserve a short way out of Otorohanga. It is a nice picnic spot.

The Te Raumauku Reserve was a favourite childhood haunt of Mrs Panorama Ana Kit. Along the road of the same name (1.9km along Te Raumauku Road) is a fantastic view. On a clear day you can see for miles, including Mt Ruapehu. The reserve is a quiet spot with lots of parking and is great for a picnic, on your right and signposted. It is a short loop track with steps but it is certainly more pleasant in summer, some areas get a little slippery in the winter. It loops from the carpark to the road, with a short wander up the road back to the carpark. If it has been raining, it can be difficult to navigate with small children without having to push them bodily up the slopes. However, only one set of steps and a small hill later on have this problem.

If you get this cache late in the afternoon and stay for a picnic til dark, you are often treated to a display of glowworms. They live on the rocks on the right hand side of the road as you walk back up, and in the damp parts next to the track as you walk down. The first half of the walk to the small cave is a well defined track with steps and boarders, so this would be the safest part to navigate in the dark if you wanted to see the odd shining light.

The co-ordinates given are near the cache, not exactly at the cache because even on very fine days it can be difficult to get a reading at the location of the cache due to the trees. The clued will help.

When you get to the point marked, seek glory up high...but you will have to look within. Don't take yourself too close to the edge though!

Safety note - after you have found the cache (walking from the carpark with the cache location on your left), you continue up the track a short way. At a larger, twisty tree the track takes a sharp left hand turn, it goes left and back behind you. It happens at the point you look at the many trees and the track ahead (which is really clear until then) and think - oh shoot, which way? At that point, turn to your left, look down the hill, and you will see the track again. It takes you to a little creek crossing and is clear from there.

Cache is a 400ml sistema.
