The Ice-Box Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Knagur Green: As requested by my fellow reviewer nearly a year ago, this cache and many others in the reserve need to be archived and the container removed. I will archive the listing and again request that arrangements be made for the removal of the container. Should the situation chance I am sure fellow cachers will once again enjoy new challenges and caches to find in the reserve.

Geocache Description:

Yet another cache in the Kranzkloof Nature Reserve. Although I believe on a path less travelled.

The Ice-Box is so named as it only gets about 30 mins of sunlight in the morning and as a result stays cool all through the day. Made up by two vertical rock faces with a steep climb down the middle of about 35 degrees.

From the parking make your way to the gate, the road there is an extension of a driveway (no 28) down which vehicles are not allowed to travel. There is a no-entry sign here but it pertains only to vehicles, it will make sense when you get down there. Sometimes the gate into the gorge is open, sometimes closed.

Once in the gorge follow the yellow trail till you get to the cairn (Obvious Pile of Rocks), at this point turn 90 degrees right and head off into the bush. Once you enter the foliage there is a path to follow (off to the left). If needs be, follow the co-ords to the Ice-Box entrance. GPS signal will start getting worse from here on.

Carefully make your way down the gulley until the rock face on your left ends. This will bring you to a large level area.
I can't vouch for the GPS accuracy so at this stage you may want to check the spoiler...

If you continue to the left you'll come across an enormous cave (62m high). This should only be done by people without a fear of heights. There is a sharp drop off to the right (+/- 225m) although the ledge is large enough to make you feel safe and it's an awesome spectacle with amazing views.
There is an old rope there which is NOT to be trusted. You'll see why...

Have fun, be careful in the wet and as always in the gorge, don't go alone.

Although the terrain is pretty serious, it really isn't TOO challenging, I placed the cache, chilled a bit, watched some birds and walked out in exactly an hour...
