Church in the Wood

Once upon a time, a lonely priest wished to build a chapel. He started work at sunrise and continued till the sun set. However, next morning he found that all his work of the previous day had been destroyed. After three unsuccessful day’s labour, he decided that the devil was at work, so he went deep into a nearby forest and built his church there, out of reach of the devil…
The exact date of the construction of the first building, a small chapel, is unknown, but the earliest reference to it is in the charter of benefaction granted to Count Henry of Ely who died in 1139, in which reference is made to an earlier charter granted to his grandfather Robert, who died in 1090, mentioning a chapel at Hollington.
With the construction of the Battle road in 1838, the population of Hollington increased rapidly, and in 1868 the parish was divided and the church of St. John, Upper Church road was built. Continued expansion in Hollington, particularly after the Second World War, necessitated the building of the daughter church of St. Anne in Chambers road. In 1977 a vestry extension was added on to Church in the Wood, and also the last candlelit church in Hastings had electricity laid on. However, the church is still lit by candles at each service, the electric lights enhancing not diminishing the effect of the candles.
Canon Bullock, writing in 1949, stated that the parish was still rural – farms, fields and woods. Sixty years later, the farms and the majority of the fields have been replaced by buildings. The woods remain and are now designated Country Parks, including the Church Wood. Long may it remain, so that in the centuries that follow visitors may find peace and seclusion in the Church in the Wood.

At the above coordinates you will find the numbers needed to replace the following letters and work out the cache location: ABCD

In what year was the lych-gate in memory of Frederick and Agnes Upson erected?

The cache can be found at: North 50° 5(A+1). (B–5) C (D–1) East 000°3(A+1). (B-7)(C+4)(D-2)

This is a very simple multi, you can park by the church then collect the clues to give you the final cache location which is OUTSIDE the Churchyard. You are looking for a magnetic 35mm film canister.

If anybody would like to expand the Church Micro series please do, we would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names, to avoid duplication.
