Geocache Description:

The Church of St John the Evangelist, Sutton Veny is a relatively new church as churches go. The foundation stone was laid on 27 May 1866 after the decision to build a new church to replace the Church of St Leonard that had fallen beyond repair. Financed by the Everett family, the building was completed inside two years with the consecration ceremony conducted on the 16 April 1868.

The church is built of Frome stone with Box ground stone dressings. Interestingly it was not built on the usual east-west axis but slightly off set so that the east window aligns with the sunrise at the winter solstice. In fact this continues through the following 6 days which include Christmas Day and the 27 December, the festival of St John the Evangelist.

A significant feature of the churchyard is the Commonwealth War Memorial which faces 170 war graves. Many of the graves are of Australian and New Zealand service personnel who were based in the Wylye Valley after the Great War and who had survived the conflicts on the western front only to be cut down by the devastating influenza epidemic that hit this country in 1918/1919. You are looking for a 35mm film canister hidden just outside the church grounds. If any body would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
