Bread, Cheese, Tomatoes and... Olive oil! These staples of Maltese cuisine are both delicious and expand my waistband. At this cache, at San Pawl Milqi (Saint Paul's Welcome), you can find remains of the apparatuses used to extract oil from olives. The container itself is an ode to oil. There is a road that goes straight to the cache, so if you have a rental car, this is very easy. If you take the bus it will be about a 10 minute walk.
The building and the apparatuses are not accessible to the public, so do not try to get in. Also, be careful if you would like to attempt to jump to see over the wall... the top stones are loose, and there is sometimes a watchman that lives in the small room connected to the chapel. While you are there, enjoy the history of this location and the church's dedication to St. Paul who shipwrecked on Malta, as explained in Chapter 27 of the New Testament. In the 1st century AD, this building in the city of Burmarrad was the summer villa for the Maltese Governor (who usually lives in Rabat) and was where the governor welcomed St. Paul, hence the name Saint Paul's Welcome. It is also thought that there are catacombs underneath this building, but no current day access to the catacombs.
Each year on Feb 10th, a national holiday celebrating St. Paul's visit, mass is held in the chapel, so avoid visiting on this day.
