Naturhistorisk museum i Bergen ligger på Muséplass 3 på Nygård. Bergens museum ble opprettet i 1825 av stiftamtmann, tidligere stortingspresident Wilhelm Frimann Koren Christie (1778-1849). Bygningen ble tegnet av arkitekt Johan Henrik Nebelong og opprinnelig plassert i utkanten av byen, på den gamle Rakkerhaugen, byens rettersted fram til 1803.
Grunnsteinen ble nedlagt i 1864, museet sto ferdig i 1865 og utstillingene åpnet året etter. I mange år tronet bygning ensomt på Nygårdshøyden, som et palass ved enden av Christiesgate. Byggets sidefløyer ble tegnet av Hans Jakob Sparre og oppført i 1898.
Bygningen inneholder botaniske, geologiske og zoologiske utstillinger. De zoologiske utstillingene er bevart i sin opprinnelig form som et museum i museet - med dyr, fugl og fisk fra hele verden.
De geologiske utstillingene er relativt moderne og viser de fleste tema innen geologi. Mineralsamlingen har eksemplarer fra hele verden og lokale prøver er utstilt.
Muséhagen ble anlagt i årene 1897 - 1899 etter en plan av konservator dr. Jørgen Brunchorst. Hagen skulle opprinnelig være en utendørs fortsettelse av de botaniske utstillingene inne i museet. Hagen ble anlagt i et myrete terrenget og besto av avrundete bed, plener og hageganger. Lokalt ble hagen omtalt som «Brunchorsts hjerte og nyrer». Stilen er den samme som vi finner igjen i Byparken, som ble anlagt i 1865.

Siden Muséhagen så lenge var en botanisk hage med hovedvekt på forskning og undervisning, er utvalget av planter spesielt stort og variert. Det er et resultat av hundre års utvikling, med stadig utprøving av nye plantearter opp gjennom tidene. I Muséhagen finnes i dag ca 3000 forskjellige arter. De fleste er hentet inn som frø fra viltvoksende arter i Norge og andre land over hele verden, men det finnes naturligvis også kulturformer, f.eks. av økonomisk viktige og særlig vakre sorter. Muséhagen er derfor en utstilling av de levende plantene som har klart seg og er blitt tatt vare på fram til i dag. Hagen omarbeidet flere ganger og bare Gamlehagen, lengst i nord, er delvis bevart fra Brunchorsts anlegg
Bergens museum var forløperen for Universitetet i Bergen som åpnet i 1948 og museet ble en del av det nye universitetet.

The Bergen Museum is the university museum in Bergen. Founded in 1825 with the intent of building large collections in the fields of culture and natural history, it became the grounds for most of the academic activity in the city, a tradition which has prevailed since the museum became part of the University of Bergen. Bergen Museum is divided into two departments, the Natural History Collections and the Cultural History Collections. It is also the caretaker of the botanical garden surrounding the natural history building, and the city's arboretum.
The current Natural History building was finished in 1865, and Bergen Museum moved in in 1866. The Natural History Collections include botanical, geological and zoological exhibitions. The botanical garden was laid out between 1897 and 1899. Most of the zoological exhibits are old and well preserved and give visitors a feeling of being transported back in time to the beginning of the last century. The evolution of man provides a fascinating glimpse of the life of our ancestors.
The geological exhibitions present the main aspects of geology. The mineral collection featuring fine specimens from all over the world as well as local ones is particularly attractive. Important aspects of Norway s dynamic oil industry are portrayed in a special section of the collections.
The Museum's Botanical Garden Is particularly beautiful during spring and summer time, while in the greenhouse you can enjoy tropical plants all year round.
The increasing research activity at the museum from the late 19th century and onwards led directly to the founding of the University of Bergen in 1948.
