Geocache Description:

Centre of Great Britain challenge, walking 20 miles on tracks and open terrain in potentially wet conditions under foot. Climatic conditions for time of year a major consideration and factor.

One of today’s methods of seeking adventure is to get outdoors to take on the rugged terrain and weather conditions which Britain provides in abundance! Attempts can be made of established challenges or personal challenges can be devised. Having set an objective, researched, planned, prepared physically and navigationally, completing the challenge provides a real sense of achievement. Sharing the challenge with the company of like minded fellows enhances the enjoyment of the adventure. This Centre of GB challenge is one such venture.

Take A Hike Adventure 2 – Centre of GB devised by Papakas Pack and in keeping with the TAHA series is a walking challenge that has been designed in such a way as to be achievable by the serious walker of appropriate fitness.

Let's be clear on one critical point, this is not a challenge for those to test their fitness and ability. This is a circular walk with little opportunity for relief or opt out. Should any individual not be up the required standard during the challenge that individual will not only compromise the safety of the whole group put will also drag down the groups progress. Route timings given in supporting documents to this event are deemed as latest times to arrive at each point. Please digest all the information given in this listing and supporting documents and be sure before you commit to the challenge on the day. You do not have to complete the challenge to log this event cache, read on for further details!

A distance of approximately 20 miles starting and finishing in Dunsop Bridge, Forest of Bowland extends across the area around the geographical centre of Great Britain (including islands) near Brennand Farm at SD6418856541 (N54 00.219 W2 32.872), this location will be visited during the challenge. The planned route utilises established tracks but also covers a significant distance over open terrain which given the time of year is most likely to be wet and boggy. There is also a good possibility of experiencing freezing conditions and snow! Setting off at first light on Sat 4 Apr 2009 it is reasonable to expect, given the planned 2mph average walking speed, to complete the challenge by sunset the same day. Participants should arrive suitably prepared and with appropriate attire and equipment for this type of challenge.

Details of centre points of the UK can be found at: (visit link)

You are invited to attend this Geocaching event to either attempt to complete the challenge in full or part but you will be responsible for making your own transport arrangements to meet with your chosen joining and leaving points along the planned route. Essentially to log an attendance at this event all that is required is to intercept and record your name in the event logbook, which will be carried by one of the walkers, by meeting the group at the start, finish or at any point in between! The route would be of interest to Geocachers and Trigpointers in that it plans to visit 7 caches and 4 trigs along its course most of which are considered remote enough not to attract regular visitors.

On Fri 3 Apr 2009 the organiser of this challenge reaches a major milestone in life, that of 50 years of age! Irrespective of participation in the challenge access to the event log book can be gained in the bar of the Inn At Whitewell SD6586046852 (N53 54.990 W2 31.263) during the evening (18:00 till 20:00 time for a meal then off to bed for an early start in the morning!) of Fri 3 Apr 2009 as this will represent a pre-challenge get together. Further access to the event log book will still be possible during a post challenge meeting held at the same venue during the evening of Sat 4 Apr 2009 (should the challenge be completed on time 19:00 onwards).

Anyone wishing to participate in or visit this event should register their interest with the organiser and in return will receive MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and GPX electronic copies of the planned route which will be used as a guide during the challenge. The main waypoints are listed in the Additional Waypoints section of this listing. It is not sufficient to rely alone on the information contained in the planned route information as this will be used as latest times to reach each waypoint with the intention of pushing on if good progress is being made.

An event satcom telephone will be available during the walking phase of the event but with callers potentially being charged at £3-£4 per minute for voice communication contact is recommended in text format! The phone number will be made available to those who register. Please bear in mind that the person carrying the phone will be attempting to complete the challenge within the required time so will not have inclination to spend undue time chatting and replying to text messages, please keep it brief! A standard Vodafone number will be also be provided and available where signal permits. When making contact by satcom text during the walking phase of the event please include your reply phone number so where signal permits reply can be made using the Vodafone network. This is not due to cost but due to the efficiency of replying by PDA phone using a querty keyboard!

Anyone participating in this event does so at their own risk. A safety pack containing essential survival equipment will be carried by the orgainsor, participants are encouraged to also carry their own survival packs. The pace will be conducted at that of the slowest person. Anyone wishing to press on ahead of this pace may of course continue under their own auspices however in doing so should not compromise their personal safety. Whereas every care has been taken to research the challenge, plan a suitable route and prepare navigational aids it is the personal responsibility of those participating to ensure they:

are of the required physical fitness
are suitably clothed for the challenge and the prevailing weather conditions
are carrying personal safety and survival equipment suitable for this type of challenge
are carrying sufficient drink and food to sustain them throughout
are familiar with the use of navigational equipment they are carrying such as map, compass and satellite navigation
have a basic knowledge of first aid
have an understanding of the countryside code
