Zuidelijke rand van de Sahara Het meest gekend natuur- en wandelgebied van Lommel is de Sahara, een woestijnachtig landschap, met midden in een helderblauw meer en rondom geurende naaldbossen. Deze oase van rust en hét Mekka van menig wandelaar of natuurliefhebber is ontstaan door menselijke activiteiten. De uitwasemingen van de vroegere zinkfabriek liet alle groene beplanting verdwijnen, met als resultaat een dor landschap bedekt met witzand. Om uitdeining te voorkomen werden bossen aangelegd, waardoor het proces van verdere verzanding werd voorkomen. Je vindt hier nog 3 andere caches: de Earthcache “De Lommelse Sahara – GCZCP6” (visit link), de multi “De Sahara van Lommel – GCC675” (visit link), en iets verder “De Bleekerheide – GCQZC2” (visit link). Vanaf WP7 kan je aansluiten op WP2 van De Sahara van Lommel, en de Earthcache is ook vlakbij.
The Sahara is the best known nature and hiking area of Lommel, a landscape of dunes, with in the middle a clear blue lake, and surrounded by pine trees. This oasis of rest and mekka of many walker or nature devotee has arisen by human activities. All green vegetation disappeared due to the evaporations of the former zinc factory, resulting in a desert landscape with blank sand. To stop the growing desert, pine trees were planted to stop the process of sanding up. You can find here 3 other caches: the de Earthcache “De Lommelse Sahara – GCZCP6” (visit link), the multi “De Sahara van Lommel – GCC675” (visit link), and a bit further away “De Bleekerheide – GCQZC2” (visit link). From WP7 you can switch to WP2 of “De Sahara van Lommel”, and also the Earthcache is close by.
[Nederlands] Een wandeling van ongeveer 4,5 kilometer door een mooi stukje Lommelse natuur brengt je naar de cache.
WP1: Hier kan je parkeren op het einde van een doodlopende straat. Een verkeersbord verbiedt de toegang voor gemotoriseerd verkeer. Zoek een tag met de coördinaten van WP2.
WP2: Zoek een tag met WP3. Je gaat verder langs de rand van een oude stortplaats, die nu begroeid is. Onderweg naar WP3 kom je ook langs een gebied waar je nog restanten van bunkers vindt. Vroeger had de NV Poudreries Réunies de Belgique uit Balen, (afgekort : PRB), hier een 40ha groot schietveld om munitie en springstoffen uit te testen.
WP3: Hier zoek je weer een plaatje met coördinaten van WP4. Hint: niet aan de omgevallen boom, maar den ernaast.
WP4: Hoeveel stammen heeft deze boom. Aantal stammen = A. Ga nu naar N 51º 14.A5(A-3) E 005º 17.134
WP5: Hoeveel schuine balken dragen het dak. Dit getal -2 is B. Ga naar N 51º 14.(B-1)91 E 005º 17.149
WP6: Je vindt hier een paal van de boslandwandeling. C = getal1+getal2+48. Ga nu naar N 51º 14.(C+707) E 005º 17.(C+417). wandel langs het water verder naar de overkant

WP1: Here you can park your car at the end of a dead-end street. A traffic sign forbids access to motorized vehicles. Look for a tag with the coordinates of WP2.
WP2: Look for a tag with WP3 coordinates. You continu along the edge of an old waste dump, which is now covered with small trees. On your way to WP3 you are passing an area were you can see the remains of bunkers. In the sixties, the NV Poudreries Réunies de Belgique from Balen, (short : PRB), used to have here a shooting field of 40ha, to test ammunition and explosives.
WP3: Look for a tag with the coordinates of WP4. Not on fallen tree, but tree next to it.
