You are looking for a straight-forward Church Micro cache.
The parish church of Broomfield, originally dedicated to St. Leonard, lies on the ancient route from Bury St. Edmunds via Braintree to Roman London.
A Norman Church was built on a Saxon church site. The South wall has a strange feature – a puddingstone boulder seen jutting from the footings.
In the 12th century in the reign of King Stephen the stone tower was built, one of only six such towers in Essex. Thick walls built almost entirely of local flints laid in regular courses.
In the 15th Century extensive alterations were made to the original form. An octagonal spire was also added to the plain tower.
St Leonard was the patron saint of prisoners and is featured in the window near the pulpit. A chapel dedicated to St Leonard stood on the north side of the nave wall until 1873 when the church wardens sold off the lead and timber and the north aisle was built.
Records show that the church was first dedicated to St Mary in 1504 but still referred to as St Leonard’s.
