Georgetown, Texas was founded in 1848 at the fork of the North and South San Gabriel rivers on land donated by George Washington Glasscock. Georgetown is the home of Southwestern University, the oldest university in Texas. Georgetown is considered to be one of the best retirement places in the USA, because of its warm, year round climate. Georgetown organizes an event on the first Friday of each month called First Friday, A Celebration of the Arts. This is an opportunity for people to visit the historic Georgetown square to browse the quaint shops, and meet the artists around one of the best preserved Victorian and pre-WW1 historic districts in the nation. In 1997 Georgetown was named a national Main Street City, the first city in Texas to receive this national recognition. Georgetown offers many miles of hike and bike trails and numerous parks that offer residents and visitors places to relax and socialize.
