New Malden Station
SADLY ALL THE PHOTOS OF THE TRAINS ARE NOW HISTORIC. THE RECENT WORKS ON THE BRIDGE HAVE RESULTED IN A 6FT HIGH SOLID METAL FENCE WHICH OBSTRUCTS THE VIEW. MANY GENERATIONS OF CHILDREN HAVE WATCHED TRAINS FROM HERE AND OFTEN BEEN REWARDED WITH A WAVE OR HOOT.
New Malden Station is a suburban station in the London Borough of Kingston upon Thames. The station is served by South West Trains running out of LondonWaterloo. The original station on this site was opened on 1st December 1846 and called ‘Malden for Coombe’ with 2 or 3 trains running per day. The station had been funded largely by a Mr Sim of Coombe House to enable him to reach London quickly. The present ‘village’ of New Malden developed around the station. The saddestday in the station’s history was 16th August 1940 when the first air raid in New Malden struck the station as a train was drawing in with about 80 fatalities. In 1961 the old brick built bridge at the station was demolished and replaced to allow double decker buses to pass underneath (and to cause flooding in times of heavy rain!).
The cache is about 400m from the station and is a magnetic 35mm film canister. It is placed just off a well-used footpath and is accessible from the foot bridge so stealth will be required. There is just a logbook and so please bring your own pencil.
