Cette cache vous fera découvrir Aulon, un village riche en histoire.
La visite se fera en trois étapes, au cours desquelles vous pourrez découvrir l’ Eglise Sainte-Marie, datant des XIe, XIVe et fin du XIXe siècles. Les moines bénédictins ont fortement marqué leur passage dans cette église. Vous verrez aussi une croix de mission et un couvercle de sarcophage (haut Moyen Age) à ses côtés.
Vous pourrez également admirer le lavoir, construit en 1842, fait en pierre de Saint-Elix-Séglan, village voisin. Ce lavoir est l’œuvre d’un sculpteur qui avait participé aux campagnes napoléoniennes, comme beaucoup d’hommes du canton.
Le monument illustre l’imagerie populaire de cette période et s’inspire de modèles médiévaux. Un grenadier et l’empereur montent la garde, tandis que la tête d’un mamelouk apparaît au centre d’une véritable arche de Noé, composée d’animaux exotiques. Le visage d’une femme domine l’ensemble : elle peut évoquer la promise restée au pays.
Et pour finir, voici le donjon aussi appelé « la prison » puisque ce monument datant des XIIe et XIIIe siècles, seul vestige du château médiéval (qui aurait abrité des Templiers), a été par la suite transformé en prison.
Sur l’un des murs se trouve une plaque en marbre gris de St Béat, posée en 1958. Elle rend hommage à Jehan d’ Aulon, écuyer de Jeanne d’ Arc.
Malheureusement, ce donjon est placé au milieu de maisons et de plus, il est en travaux ! Je joins une petite photo montage pour aider votre imagination à lui donner un autre cadre…

1/ Rendez-vous au point 1, où vous pouvez vous garer, à la position indiquée :

2/ Restez garé à cet endroit. La promenade n’est pas très longue, et la visite en sera plus intéressante. Déplacez vous vers le point 2, à la position indiquée :

Vous passerez devant le lavoir, qui se trouvera sur votre gauche.

A = année de la mission inscrite sur la croix

E = nombre d’années célébrées par la plaque qui rend hommage à Jehan d’ Aulon.
F = âge de Jehan d’ Aulon en 1438.

This cache will make you discover Aulon, a village rich in history.
The visit will be divided into 3 steps, and you’ll discover Sainte- Marie’s Church, dating from the XIth, XIVth and end of XIXth centuries. The Benedictine monks strongly left their mark in this church. You will also see a mission cross and a sarcophagus lid (early Middle Ages) by its side.
You will admire the wash house as well, built in 1842, with a stone from St Elix-Séglan, a neighbouring village. This wash house was made by a sculptor who had taken part in the Napoleonic campaigns, like many men in the canton.
This monument illustrates the popular imagery of this period and draws its inspiration from medievial models. A grenadier and the emperor are keeping watch, while a Mameluke’s head appears in the centre of a genuine Noah’s Ark, composed of exotic animals. A woman’s face dominates the whole set of sculptures: it may conjure up the beloved one waiting for her soldier at home.
And eventually, here is the keep also called “the prison” since this monument dating back to the XIIth and XIIIth centuries, the only remnant of the medieval castle (it is said it would have sheltered Templars), was later used as a prison.
On one of the walls, there is a slab made of grey marble from St Béat, placed there in 1958. It pays tribute to Jehan of Aulon, Jane of Arc’s horseman.
Unfortunately, this keep is located in the middle of houses, and besides, it is being restored! I post a fake photo to help your imagination to put it in another setting….

2/ Leave your car there. The walk is not very long and the visit will be all the more interesting.
