This beautiful footpath between arable fields and mature woods has one of the best views in Essex. Look through the gap down a valley over the marshes to the Kentish hills. This is my flagship cache and the ideal place to drop off and exchange coins or tb's, a sort of coin exchange.
Cunning Murrell the seventh son of a seventh son was the most famous witchdoctor in Essex. He lived opposite the church in Hadleigh in 1812 and used this path every night on his way to the marshes to gather herbs and potions for his spells. They say that on rainy nights around full moon he can be heard cursing as he tries to put up his cane umbrella.
After finding this Cache why not have tea and cake in the new Salvation Army tea rooms, bad design too noisy. But never on a full moon when theres a hint of rain in the air.
A WORD OF WARNING:
Murrell said as long as the Castle is standing there will always be six Witches within two miles of Hadleigh Woods. I think I know three of them. His wonderful oak chest that held all of his papers can be seen at Southchurch Hall Museum.
