Just a few supposed facts about this old Iron Age settlement.

(Various spellings include Lachenested, Jeshamsted, Esthamsted and Leshamsted. The manor of Easthampstead was held in 1086 by Westminster Abbey – its value was 50 shillings!)

Elijah Fenton, tutor to William Trumbull’s son, translated Homer’s “The Odyssey” with Binfield’s Alexander Pope at Easthampstead Park. Pope later wrote Fenton’s epitaph.

The original Golden Farmer was a man with something of a Robin Hood reputation. William Davies, a well-to-do Gloucestershire farmer, held up local coaches and took gold from their passengers. Many a local poor man became accustomed to finding a golden guinea thrust beneath his door. The modern day pub is said to stand on the site of an earlier building that William frequented.

Catherine of Aragon’s marriage to Prince Arthur (son of Henry VII) was arranged at Easthampstead Park. It was also here she received news that her 2nd husband, Henry VIII had finalised their divorce.

Windmill fort was the name of the area that is now called Caesar’s Camp, named after the mill that stood there.

In her old age, Queen Anne was unable to ride with the hunt, so she liked to follow in her carriage instead. Thence came Nine Mile Ride and various other local rides.

The Wokingham Blacks and their leader William Shorter were a group of vicious 18th century bandits. The deputy custodian of Bigshot Rayle informed the local authority of a criminal meeting in the Forest Lodge at Caesar’s Camp, where the Sheriff and his men rounded up the gang. Shorter was hanged on the county boundary at Wishmoor Cross. (Always thought Wokingham had dark secrets!)
