Geocache Description:

Right in the heart of Downtown Amman is the imposing monument of the Roman Amphitheater.

The Roman Amphitheater in Amman is the most impressive relic of the ancient city of Philadelphia, a member of the decapolis. This amphitheater which dates back to 130 AD was built during the time of Emperor Antonius Pius. Separated into 3 sections, with 33 rows, this amphitheater could seat a crowd of 6,000 people! Cut into the side of the mountain, the area in which it now stands originally served as a necropolis (cemetery). Today, this monument is still used for cultural events.

Just in front of the Amphitheater to the left is a smaller amphitheater called the Odeon. It seats only 500 or so people and was most likely covered. This stage was reserved for the special recitals and performances.

Also common in Roman cities were fountains dedicated to water nymphs. An amazing, beautiful Nymphaeum can be found in Jerash but there is also a more dilapidated version here in the ancient area of Philadelphia. The Nymphaeum in Amman is a few minutes walk from the Amphitheater and is waypointed below.
